New Pitcher Points Possibility
This is not yet a proposal. It is simply in a discussion stage. If proposed, then passed, it would be in effect for next year.
If there is not a number in the Holds column, then it was not looked up. Only players with 11 or more holds were recorded.
This is the formula: (W x 10) + (QS x 10) + (SV x 7) + (Hld x 3). These numbers are not etched in stone. Should a QS be worth the same as a Win? Should the Win maybe get 15 and the QS 7? Johnson would gain 120 and lose 96 for a net gain of 24 to 584 points, 2 points better than Bonds the top hitter.
Npts is the New points total, Pts is the current system.
---------------------------------
Who gets helped by this new system? Should the gap between Johnson and Schilling be closed as it was here, or is Johnson's dominant ERA worth something? Should Smoltz and Koch be right there with Pedro?
Ben Sheets goes from 182 to 360, primarily because of his 25 QS's. Does he deserve the huge gain?
Dan Wright goes from 186 to 350 despite a 5+ ERA, Jose Mesa from 215 to 355 with no blows and 2 more pts per save,
Pedro, Randy, and Maddux lost points. Wakefield lost 38 because a 2.81 ERA should have more than 11 wins? Whoops, he had 5 holds so thus he just lost 23 points. Chris Hammond lost 48 points despite 17 holds, with an 0.95 ERA.
----------------------------------
Two new columns have been added since first published, innings pitched and innings points. This is a new idea that uses innings pitched as a big part of the points makeup, because every GM says they are looking for someone who can throw innings. Without it there is not an incentive with the system to fill the 1450 innings requirement for your pitching staff. The formula is as follows: ipts = IP + (W x 7) + (QS x 5) + (SV x 5) + (Hld x 3).
With this system the top 205 pitchers, throwing 29,000 innings (1450 x 20 teams in our league) get 61,000 points. This is far more points than the other two systems, and really closes the gap between hitter points (72,000) and pitcher points. The current point system produces only 37,000 points, and the proposed npts produces 51,000.
Closer points drop a bit between ipts and npts. That could easily be rectified by giving a Save 6 points. Is this good? Let's figure it out. Johnson goes out and pitches 8 shutout innings, gets the win, and picks up W+QS+IP = 7+5+8 = 20 points. Closer pitches one innings and gets the Save and picks up SV+IP = 6+1 = 7 points. Meanwhile on the other team, Clemens pitches all 9 giving up 1 run and gets the loss, but still picks up QS+IP = 5+9 = 14 points.

The guys who REALLY pick up points are the middle relief pitchers. Romero jumps from 163 to 196 to 248 between the 3 systems. Quantrill is more pronounced from 101 to 153 to 212. Innings eater Dotel jumps 164 to 195 to 262. Scott Schoenweiss jumps from 93 to 220 to 264!
Should the difference between Johnson and Schoenweiss be this new 588 to 264, or the old 560 to 96? Despite what many think about increasing pitcher values to make them as valuable as batters, you are in fact decreasing the value of Johnson in this system. Should the middle guys often pitching in blow outs have those innings get ANY value?
