Cubs explode with 5 more homeruns and have hit 10 in the last two games!!!! Can their pitching hold up this time?

Starting Pitchers: Pirates Pedro Martinez dnp so they go with Roy Halladay vs Cubs Bud Smith dnp so they go with Darren Oliver

Halladay on July 7, 6 ip, 3 er (12 pts)

Oliver on July 3, 6 ip, 6 er (24 pts)

If Pinero had started he would have gone on July 5, 2.1 ip, 0 er.

Pirates take a 2 point lead as the Cubs pitching falters again.

Bullpen Pitchers #1: Pirates Antonio Alfonseca vs. Cubs Trevor Hoffman

Alfonseca on July 8, 1 ip, 0 er

Hoffman on July 3, 1 ip, 0 er

Pirates have now covered 7 ip and still allowed 3 er (12 pts)

Cubs have now covered 7 ip and have still allowed 6 er (24 pts)

Pirates still have a 2 point lead.

Bullpen Pitchers #2: Pirates Roberto Hernandez vs Cubs Danny Graves

Hernandez on July 6, 1 ip, 0 er

Graves on July 5, 2 ip, 0 er

Pirates have now covered 8 innings and allowed 12 points

Cubs have now covered all 9 ip and have allowed 24 pts.

Pirates still lead by two but have one more inning to cover.

Bullpen Pitcher #3: Pirates Billy Koch

Koch on July 5 goes 0.2 ip, 0 er

Still 1 out left.

Bullpen Pitcher #4: Pirates Eric Hiljus

Hiljus on July 5, 1 ip, 0 er.

Pirates WIN. Their bullpen hangs on with 3 shutout innings, pitchers give up 12 total points.

Pirates Net Total = 23 offense minus 12 pitching = plus 11

Cubs Net Total = 33 offense minus 24 pitching = plus 9

Piniero continues to have a stunned look on his face.

If Pinero had started then the Cubs would have 5.1 shutout innings instead of Oliver's 24 pts in 6 innings.

The last 3.2 innings would have to be covered by Oliver who would give up

a total of 24 x 11/18 = 14.66 pts instead of 24, thus Cubs would be 7.33 pts ahead.

Should Piniero have started? Since Oliver relieved 4 batters in Game 2, should he have started Game 3?

Ordinarily one would say he would not realistically be able to come back after a relief appearances and start the next game.

However, what if there was a day off between the two games?

Oliver was ranked by the Cubs ahead of Pineiro and thus given the start. Whether right or not, that's the way it stands.

It's unfortunate that this decision ends up deciding the Championship, but it stands, nonetheless.

Cubs win the Regular Season, and Pirates win the Playoffs.

Hail to both teams, our 2001 BB2000 Champions.
